Course Description

Difficult conversations are part of supporting children, families, and the people who care for them. Approached with courage and compassion, these moments can strengthen trust, deepen understanding, and create opportunities for growth.

This four-week Deeper Dive livestream series offers practical, trauma-informed tools for navigating challenging conversations with confidence and clarity. In four weekly 90-minute sessions, you’ll explore how stress and trauma influence communication, recognize fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses, and learn ways to regulate your own emotions before and during difficult conversations.

At the heart of the series is the CALM Conversation Model—Connect, Acknowledge, Listen, and Move Forward. Through realistic scenarios from child welfare settings, interactive activities, conversation planning, and role-play, you’ll practice addressing concerns honestly while preserving dignity, strengthening connection, and encouraging accountability.

Whether you’re a caregiver, foster parent, professional, or someone who leads and supports others, you’ll leave with practical strategies to turn difficult conversations into opportunities for connection, understanding, problem-solving, and positive change.

Dates: Tuesdays 10:00 – 11:30am EDT: October 27th, November 3rd, 10th, 17th, 2026

Practical Skills

Bad Behavior or Adaptive Behavior?

Children from hard places learn survival strategies to cope with circumstances beyond their control. These strategies may look like willful disobedience, but we must learn to see it as adaptive behavior, and address it with a regulated response.

Practical Skills

Using the Power of Yes

Using the power of yes can build significant trust with children from hard places. When we build up this trust with “yes” we help them be better able to handle the “nos” that come.
